Chicago Sights

River North Gallery District

Fodor's Review

North of the Merchandise Mart and south of Chicago Avenue, between Orleans and Dearborn streets, is a concentration of art galleries carrying just about every kind of work imaginable. In fact, virtually every building on Superior Street between Wells and Orleans houses at least one gallery. Visitors are welcome to stop in. On some Friday nights (check the Chicago Gallery News for dates), the galleries coordinate their exhibitions to showcase new works, and free

art gallery tours leave from Chicago and Franklin on Saturday at 11. Although River North is still a good bet for great art, many artists have ditched the high-rent district for the cheaper, more industrial West Loop.
