In University Village, new luxury town homes and loft conversions intermix with row houses and two-flats on a stretch of the city that not long ago was considered a wasteland. Retailers, including Barbara's Bookstore (1218 S. Halsted St., University Village. 312/413-2665), a small local chain, have been lured to the area along with the new residents. The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum (800 S. Halsted St., University Village. 312/413-5353) on the UIC campus is a city landmark as well as a memorial to Jane Addams, who launched innovative settlement house programs.
