The redbrick Victorian Hull House was the birthplace of social work, which makes it an American landmark. Social welfare pioneers and peace advocates Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr started the American settlement house movement in this house in 1889 and wrought near miracles in their surrounding community, which was then a slum for new immigrants. Pictures and letters add context to the two museum buildings, which re-create the homey setting the residents experienced.
