Water Works Pumping Station

  • Address: 163 E. Pearson St., at Michigan Ave., Near North, Chicago, IL | Map It

Fodor's Review:

Water is still pumped to some of the city residents at a rate of about 250 million gallons per day from this Gothic-style structure, which, along with the Water Tower across the street, survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The acclaimed Lookingglass Theatre calls this place home. The station also houses a Chicago Water Works Visitor Information Center (877/244-2246. www.877chicago.com. Mon.-Thurs. 8 AM-7 PM; Fri. 8 AM-6 PM; Sat. 9 AM-6 PM; Sun. 10 AM-6 PM), which has a sandwich shop.
