Fine Arts Building

Fine Arts Building Review

This creaky building was constructed in 1895 to house the showrooms of the Studebaker Company, then makers of carriages. Publishers, artists, and even architect Frank Lloyd Wright have used its spaces; today the principal tenants are professional musicians. Take a look at the handsome exterior, then step inside the marble-and-woodwork lobby. The motto engraved in the marble as you enter says, "All passes—art alone endures." The building has an interior courtyard, across which strains of piano music and soprano voices compete with tenors as they run through exercises. Open Studios tours (4:30-9:30 on the second Friday of each month) include live music, galleries, and a peek at the studios.
