It's almost as if a piece of Brooklyn touched down here on the southern border of the Pilsen neighborhood. Everyone who works here appears to double as an artist or musician, which seems appropriate given the artful, understated dishes. Like its sister restaurant, Lula Café in Logan Square, local and seasonal rule the menu. There is usually at least one spit-roasted entrée, perhaps chicken, pork loin, or duck leg, along with a vegetarian main and a fish option, as well as house-made pastas, and appetizers that make use of the freshest produce. You can see the open kitchen from the bar, but to be close to the flames, snag a seat next to the fireplace on the enclosed patio, complete with a living wall. Nightwood draws a crowd at brunch, and the maple-bacon doughnut is unforgettable.
