Molokai's south shore is enclosed by the largest reef system in the United States—an area of shallow, protected sea that stretches over 30 mi. This reef gives inexperienced kayakers an unusually safe, calm environment for shoreline exploring. Outside the reef, Molokai waters are often rough and treacherous. Kayakers out here should be strong, experienced, and cautious.
The South Shore Reef area is superb for flat-water kayaking any day of the year. It's best to rent a kayak from Molokai Outdoors in Kaunakakai and slide into the water from Kaunakakai Wharf, on either side. Get out in the morning before the wind picks up and paddle east, exploring the ancient Hawaiian fishponds. When you turn around to return, you'll usually get a push home by the wind, which blows strong and westerly along this shore in the afternoon.
Independent kayakers who are confident about testing their skills in rougher seas can launch at the west end of the island from Hale O Lono Harbor (at the end of a long, bumpy, private dirt road from Maunaloa town). At the east end of the island, enter the water near mile marker 20 or beyond and explore in the direction of Mokuhooniki Island. Kayaking anywhere outside the South Shore Reef is safe only on calm days in summer.
Molokai Fish and Dive. At the west end of Kaunakakai's commercial strip, this all-around outfitter provides guided kayak excursions inside the South Shore Reef. One excursion paddles through a dense mangrove forest and explores a huge, hidden ancient fishpond. A bonus of going with guides: if the wind starts blowing hard, they tow you back with their boat. The fee is $89 for the half-day trip. Check at the store (61 Ala Malama Street) for numerous other outdoor activities. 61 Ala Malama St., Kaunakakai, 96748. 808/553-5926. molokaifishanddive.com.
