Authentic, traditional Hawaiiana pervades the six guest rooms and common areas of this large home, located in a mountainside neighborhood just outside Lahaina. Handcrafted koa furniture and Hawaiian artworks and artifacts are in every room. There are two studios plus the smaller Ginger/Hibiscus bedroom on the lower level, and three suites on the upper level, all with queen-size bed, private bath, air-conditioning, TV, phone, refrigerator, and toiletries. A stone fireplace (more for show than warmth in Lahaina's tropical climate) is the centerpiece of the upstairs common area, which is filled with displays of Hawaiian works and descriptions of their history. There's a full kitchen and games and books fill the downstairs living room. The Hawaiian touches continue poolside with two thatched hale (huts): one where guests can learn Hawaiian crafts such as lauhala weaving and one where they can just relax in a swinging hammock. Pros: reasonable rates include breakfast; hosts like to share their knowledge of local culture; large closets. Cons: in a residential neighborhood close to other houses; utility wires interfere with ocean view; air-conditioning units can be noisy.
