Hale Hookipa Inn Review
A handsome 1924 Craftsman-style house in the heart of Makawao town, this inn on both the Hawaii and the National Historic Registers provides a great base for excursions to Haleakala or to Hana. Owner Cherie Attix has furnished it with antiques and fine art, and she allows you to peruse her voluminous library of Hawaii-related books. She's also a fountain of local knowledge. The house has three pretty guest rooms with distinctive furnishing such as a Hawaiian-made four-poster bed or an antique brass bed, and the South Wing, which sleeps four and includes the kitchen. Two rooms have wonderful claw-foot tubs. The lush, serene grounds have a koi pond and the biggest Norfolk pine tree you've ever seen. Discounts are offered to guests who participate in volunteer projects through Cherie's site (www.volunteer-on-vacation-hawaii.com).

This is a must-do location if you're doing the sunrise at Haleakala or the Road to Hana. Also close to Paia which is a laid back and fun town with lots of restaurants. Mama's Fish House is also close by for an exceptional meal if you want to be spoiled. The B&B is very quaint and clean and peaceful. It's decorated with great antiques and Hawaiin decor that make you relax upon arrival. The owner is the best hostess and is quite informative and very helpful. She gave us great suggestions for adventures, meals, etc....even loaned us warm coats for the sunrise and allowed us to leave our luggage after check-out while we did the drive to Hana. Her fresh fruit and healthy breakfast was much appreciated...as much as her warm personality and welcoming spirit. We stayed in the Kona wing which had tons of room in 2 separate big bedrooms with a private bath in-between. This is a perfect location and the price is a bonus. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it highly. Thanks to Cherie for a wonderful experience! If you want to relax and unwind, this is the place!!
