If a taste of rural Hawaii life in plantation days is what you crave, you'll find it here. The setting is pastoral—the 2-acre property is lush with tropical foliage, has an expansive lawn, and is fringed with huge monkeypod and banyan trees. The cottages (bedrooms, really, with updated baths and kitchenettes) are simple and functional. The gem, though, is the 1927 plantation house with its sprawling living and dining rooms, a kitchen any cook will adore, and a lanai that will take you back in time. The configuration of the property allows for lots of combinations; you can rent one, two, or all three bedrooms in the house or even add the adjoining one-bedroom cottage. And you can rent the entire property for a family reunion or a retreat and have access to a large yoga and meditation space complete with audio and video capabilities. Pros: one cottage and the pool are outfitted for travelers with disabilities; you can walk to Makawao town for dining and shopping. Cons: the furniture in the cottages is pretty basic; few amenities.
