Fodor's Review

Getting there is half—well, maybe a quarter—of the fun. Tucked in the back corner of a covered parking garage, Tokyo Tei is worth seeking out for wonderful local-style Japanese food. At lunch you can rub elbows with bankers and construction workers; at dinner, three generations might be celebrating Tutu's (grandma's) birthday at the next table. This is a bona fide local institution where for more than six decades people have come for the food and the comfort of familiarity. Enjoy the freshest sashimi, feather-light yet crispy shrimp and vegetable tempura, and local-style bentos and plate lunches.

DO NOT go to this restaurant. Based on the Fodor's review promising "feather-light yet crispy shrimp and vegetable tempura" we went here for our last meal in Maui just before heading to the airport. I boarded the plane hungry because the food in this place was completely unpalatable. I consider myself an adventurous eater who loves a good hole-in-the-wall restaurant, but this place was downright disgusting no matter how you try to spin the reason

for its longevity. The Vegetable Tempura was unbelievably greasy and tasteless. All batter and no vegetables, the oil literally dripped down my hand when I held up a piece. The Sashimi was thickly cut and stringy. The fish was overcooked and dry. The plastic dishes were either filty or (hopefully just) stained. To add insult to injury, the restaurant is located in a seedy part of town, next to a very sketchy bar. If you're a tourist, expect all eyes to follow you as you walk through the filthy parking lot. Creepy. In short, I'm shocked this restaurant is recommended by Fodor's and even more shocked it is a "Fodor's Choice." Downright nasty. This restaurant recommendation should be removed from the Maui guidebook. I find it hard to believe that whoever wrote the Fodor's review has ever actually eaten here.
