Fodor's Expert Review
Just 20 minutes away from Kahului Airport but a world away from the heat and hustle of Maui's resort districts lies G and Z Upcountry, a new bed-and-breakfast run by retired tourism exec Marsha Wienert and husband John. The cozy accommodations, attached to the innkeepers' home, is surrounded by a 6-acre fruit farm in Kula at the 3,000-foot elevation of Haleakala. Guests can take in expansive views while lounging under the shade of a jacaranda tree or barbecuing on the deck. The one-bedroom unit offers a full kitchen and queen sofa sleeper and is close to walking trails, farm tours, the Maui Winery, and country cafés. The complimentary daily continental breakfast includes island fruit and cinnamon rolls, mango scones, and other fresh-baked treats from Jeanne the Bread Lady, who lives up the street.
Tip Be sure that your stay involves a trip up Haleakala to view the sunrise. Michael puts together a wonderful care package to enjoy this beautiful spectacle, including blankets, chairs, coffee, and snacks.

Getting Around
It’s easy (and preferable) to explore Maui’s smaller towns by foot, but to get to them and around the island, you’ll need to rent a car. If you plan on exploring the Road to Hana, get something with a little extra horsepower (but not too big as the road can get very narrow).
Restaurants
Kula Lodge and Restaurant (8-min drive) is a wonderfully romantic upcountry spot. It’s got stunning views, and serves a Hawaiian-heavy menu at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with the only full-service bar in Kula. The garden terrace is the special occasion spot at the lodge, nestled amongst the trees at 3000 feet above sea level, with a wood-burning pizza oven and open-air views.
Find fresh, vibrant food at Fork and Salad (Kahului location) (23-min drive), featuring signature, as well as build-your-own salads, grain bowls, and sandwiches made with a wide variety of mostly local and organic ingredients. These healthy options make a great choice to pick up for a beach picnic or day of hiking.
