Timing Is Everything

In winter, Maui is the spot for whale-watching. The humpback whales start arriving in December, are in full force by February, and are gone by early May. The biggest North Shore waves show up in winter, whereas kiteboarders and windsurfers enjoy the windy, late summer months. Jacarandas shower Upcountry roads in blossoms in spring, and silverswords bloom in summer. In high season—June through August and Christmas through spring break—the island is jam-packed with visitors. The best months for bargain hunters are May, September, and October.
