Whales are seen off Lanai's shores from December through April. A Pineapple Festival on the July 4 Saturday in Dole Park features local food, Hawaiian entertainment, a pineapple-eating and -cooking contest, and fireworks. Buddhists hold their annual outdoor Obon Festival honoring departed ancestors with joyous dancing, food booths, and taiko drumming in early July. Lanai celebrates the statewide Aloha Festivals in mid-October with a hometown parade, car contests, more food, and more music. Beware hunting season weekends—from mid-February through mid-May, and mid-July through mid-October.
