Lanai has an ideal climate year-round, hot and sunny at the sea and a few delicious degrees cooler Upcountry. In Lanai City, the nights and mornings can be almost chilly when a mystic fog or harsh trade winds settle in. Winter months are known for slightly rougher weather -- periodic rain showers and higher surf.
Whales are seen off Lanai's shores from December through April. A Pineapple Festival on the 4th of July Saturday in Dole Park features local food, Hawaiian entertainment, a pineapple eating and cooking contest and fireworks. Buddhists hold their annual outdoor Obon Festival honoring departed ancestors with joyous dancing, food booths, and taiko drumming in early July. Lanai celebrates the statewide Aloha Festivals in mid-October with a hometown parade, car contests, more food, and more music. Beware hunting season weekends -- from mid-February through mid-May, and mid-July through mid-October. Most of the private lodging properties are booked way in advance.
