Lanai has two resort courses that offer very different environments and challenges. They are so diverse that it's hard to believe they're on the same island, let alone just 20 minutes apart by resort shuttle.
The Challenge at Manele. Designed by Jack Nicklaus (1993), this course sits right over the water of Hulopoe Bay. Built on lava outcroppings, the course features three holes on cliffs that use the Pacific Ocean as a water hazard. The five-tee concept challenges the best golfers—tee shots over natural gorges and ravines must be precise. This unspoiled natural terrain is a stunning backdrop, and every hole offers ocean views. Green Fee: hotel guests $210, nonguests $225. Facilities: Driving range, putting green, golf carts, rental clubs, pro-shop, lessons, restaurant, bar.
The Experience at Koele. This challenging Greg Norman (1991) layout begins at an elevation of 2,000 feet. The front 9 move dramatically through ravines wooded with pine, koa, and eucalyptus trees; seven lakes and streams with cascading waterfalls dot the course. No other course in Hawaii offers a more incredible combination of highland terrain, inspired landscape architecture, and range of play challenges.
