Lanai's southeast coast offers leisurely paddling inside the windward reef. Curious sea turtles and friendly manta rays may tag along for company. There are miles of scenic coastline with deserted beaches on the inside reef to haul up on for an informal picnic. When the wind comes from the southwest, the windward coast is tranquil. Kayaking along the leeward cliffs is more demanding with rougher seas and strong currents. No kayaking is permitted in the Marine Conservation District at Hulopoe Bay.
Early mornings tend to be calmer. The wind picks up as the day advances. Expect strong currents along all of the coasts. Experience on the water is advised, and knowing how to swim is essential. There's one major drawback to kayaking on Lanai: you'll have to travel with your own kayak or arrange for a Maui vendor to meet you on the island, as there are no kayak rentals or guides on Lanai.
