Hoopulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill Review

Rice grew in the taro fields of Hanalei Valley for almost 80 years—beginning in the 1880s and ending in the early 1960s. Today, this history is embodied in the Haraguchi family, whose ancestors threshed, hulled, polished, separated, graded, and bagged rice in their 3,500-square-foot rice mill, which was demolished once by fire and twice by hurricanes. Rebuilt to the exacting standards of the National Register of Historic Places, the mill—and neighboring taro fields—is now open for tours on a very limited schedule mainly due to endangered bird-nesting areas. The family still farms taro on the onetime rice paddies and also operates the Hanalei Taro & Juice kiosk in Hanalei town. Reservations are required for the tour, which currently runs on Wednesdays.

    well organized, friendly and fairly comfortable tour, very little walking, great treats and lunch. We paid $174 for two and not $130 as listed. A bit pricey but for a charitable organization I guess worthwhile. The owner's daughter led the tour and was quite witty, personable and an attractive mother of a 1 1/2 and 4 year olds. Very personal story of this 5 generational farm family, felt like a family guest. We used an 18 passenger van to get to the farm, saw many exotic and protected birds, all pointed out by our guide. Lots of material, very interesting and historical/biological. Lasted about 3 hrs. followed by a Hawaiian plate lunch of your choice.
