Casa di Amici Review

Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood above Poipu Beach, this longtime restaurant has an outside deck open to sweeping ocean views. Ownership recently changed hands and there's now a more eclectic menu, with a few Asian and Mexican dishes slipped into the original all-Italian line up. The interior has been freshened up with a remodel and you can still dine outside with the twinkly lights. Start with the spicy tamales or fried calamari with a lemon-caper sauce. Choices include chicken picatta, ahi with ginger miso, a Thai beef satay risotto, and fettucine with housemade Italian sausage. For dessert, take the plunge with a baked Hawaii—a chocolate-macadamia-nut brownie topped with coconut and passion-fruit sorbet and flambéed Italian meringue. Volume here can get a bit loud.

    Casa di Amici Review

Having learned on a previous visit that "spicy" meant too hot to eat, I opted for steak. When it came, instead of being medium well, as ordered, it was very rare. The server took it back and three minutes later it was back - still rare. Back it went and some time later it did finally come back as requested. HOwever, by that time, my dinner partner was finished with his meal and all the rest of my meal was barely lukewarm. At which point the server never appeared again, nor was there any offer to compensate for the pitiful way things had gone, nor in fact any other notice by any of the staff other than the very polite young man who cleared the table. The bill was dropped off without comment and processed same. We will definitely not be going here again. It has disappointed on three occasions.

Food is good but service and value are not

No complaints over the food. Both the Italian and the fish were all good. Unfortunately, our server was very nice but not very competent. She got almost all of our orders wrong and those of the adjacent table. The wine list is extensive and expensive. Frankly, the pretenses of grandeur are a bit silly. They have very sound food and should keep it simple without pretending to be anything more than that.

    Great service!

Our waiter, Tom, was awesome. So was a younger girl who constantly refilled our water and other beverages. The host (?)owner (?) also helped clear our table and came by a few times to check up on us. Chipotle chili salsa risotto with pork was a hit with my husband.
Big portions! Great grilled ahi. Decent appetizer crab cakes.
just wished there was a view!

    Our favorite on Kauai

Randall Yates (the owner/chef) has experienced the same critical problem as almost every other restaurant on Kauai over the last several years and that is the inability to keep good help - it's a bidding war for almost any skill set there! Our experiences there over the last five years mirror what I see from other reviewers - we've had great dinners there but last week we were practically ignored by our waiter - he tagged us as not being high spenders so he focused his energies on other tables. Amazingly he did this even after I mentioned the chef by name. The waiter obviously believes in the instant gratification of a large tip vs. keeping his job! The food, tournedos of beef and paella, was excellent (yes the sausage is spicy), but it was fifteen minutes before a basket of bread arrived at the table! Our friends also have reported somewhat erratic experiences there, but have endured the poor ones in order to benefit from the very good ones. Generally the restaurant is highly regarded by the locals (Randall doesn't advertise much because he doesn't need to), and it's usually the tourists that get the rude treatment by the wait staff. Pricing is not unreasonable for a restaurant having such an extensive menu ($20 - 26/entree) and the atmosphere is very romantic. To the woman who complained about her experience with ordering an item and "hold the fish", I'll bet either that request never got to the kitchen or Randall took the evening off.

Awful service, awful food, AVOID THIS ONE!

My sister and I were looking forward to a wonderful Italian meal. After my sister ordered the waiter took both our menus away without asking what I wanted!? Then I asked him whether the chef could make the pasta puttanesca (which came with fish/shellfish) in a vegetarian version, as "I don't eat anything that lives under the sea. The waiter said "no. When I asked him again, just to be sure, whether the puttanesca dish could be made without any fish, he said Oh yes, OK.After a while he delivered HUMMUS and bread. HUMMUS at an Italian restaurant?! I'd ordered a "Greek salad" with sun-dried tomato vinaigrette: it was drowned in a creamy mustard dressing so spicy-hot I couldnt eat it (nor could my sister, who loves spicy food). The waiter didnt recognize that anything was wrong, even after we asked him if the chef had reached for the red pepper flakes instead of the sun-dried tomatoes. /My pasta arrived with mussels, fish, & calamari. I couldn't believe it. I told him, "Um, I said no fish." He came back with exactly the same dish with calamari still on top. When I complained he took the dish back into the kitchen in a huff, then came out with THE SAME DISH. I said, "This just had fish on it--it will make me sick." THEN he said, "Its made with a fish stock." Hmmm... why didnt he say that from the beginning? /I ordered the chicken piccata with linguine. The waiter came back to ask me what sort of pasta I'd ordered. Hello!?! A mediocre dish--chicken rather tasteless, sauce greasy. And BOTH my sister's & my dishes were decorated with squiggles of Chinese HOISIN SAUCE. !?!?!? Gross. /My sister says for the record that her food was OK. Her salads peanut-sesame dressing was fine, & though the fish was a bit tough she enjoyed her dish. There was a lot of it, too. /Needless to say, we skipped dessert. I wouldn't dream of going back. I appreciate inventive food, & I usually don't mind if service is iffy, but this was the worst of all worlds.
