Fodor's Review:

An elaborate tropical garden, waterfalls right off the lobby, Greek statues and columns, and an enormous 26,000-square-foot swimming pool characterize the grand—and grandiose—scale of this resort on Kalapaki Bay, which looks out at the dramatic Haupu mountains. This resort has it all—fine dining, shopping, a spa, golf, tennis, and water activities of all kinds. Rooms have tropical decor, and most have expansive ocean views. It's comfortable and convenient, though the airport noise can be a turnoff. Many of the rooms have been converted to time-shares, too. Pros: Oceanfront setting, good restaurants, convenient location. Cons: Airport noise, inconvenient parking.

  • Hotel Details: 356 rooms, 11 suites, 232 time-share units
  • In-room: refrigerator.
  • In-hotel: 2 restaurants, golf courses, room service, tennis courts, children's programs (ages 5-12), pool, gym, spa, beachfront.
  • Credit Cards: AE, D, DC, MC, V

July 2008: Can't review the facility because we chose not to pursue it after the strange 2-day experience with booking. We were interested in a 2-BR villa, which the Marriott website doesn't make perfectly clear are timeshares. We kept getting different quotes, call-backs, speaking to a rep and her "manager," and before I realized what was going on, I had revealed our annual income and the fact we own our home! (Huh? To make a condo reservation guaranteed with a credit card?) Then came mention of not being "required" to attend a tour of the property, but I might want to because there would be gift "incentives." Ugh! We were furious by the time we finally figured out what the drill was. This garbage should be clearly explained in your guide.

We stayed at this hotel prior to Iniki when it was a Westin. It was, at that time, wonderful. We have returned to Kauai many times since then but now stay at Princeville. Since we never get to the south of Kauai since we enjoy paradise at Princeville and North Shore, we decided to stay three nights at the Marriott. My husband and I are both platinum elite level with Marriott since we travel 80% each for our jobs with several million points each but we decided to pay for a room rather than use our points. There was a real disconnect at the valet parking and bell captain area upon arrival. The front desk associates were unpleasant, not only to us but other travelers checking in also. There were mistakes with the reservation even though it had been booked directly with the hotel. No one seemed to care if we stayed or left. The room was old, stale, stained, in desperate need of repair and updating. We were in an oceanfront room in the tower nearest the beach. Room service was less than stellar. Mistakes were made with the breakfast orders and again, no one seemed to care. It was very disappointing and we will never stay there again, nor have we recommended it to friends who travel to Kauai. We checked out a night early. They charged us the full rate, even with all of the documented problems (room maint). We went to the Hyatt. The Hyatt is a bit of a drive from the airport area but is a lovely property. We would stay at the Hyatt again, if we ever decide to leave Princeville, but never again at the Marriott.
