The only true beachfront resort on Kauai's North Shore, Hanalei Colony is a laid-back, go-barefoot kind of resort sandwiched between towering mountains and the sea. There's an emphasis on simplicity here: No phones, TVs, or stereos in the rooms. But Wi-Fi is available in every unit. Some units are 10 feet from the sand, and though it's a beautiful coastline, the ocean is too rough for swimming. The units are well maintained, with Hawaiian-style furnishings, full kitchens,
and lanai. Amenities, such as cocktail receptions and cultural activities, vary from season to season. There's an art gallery, spa, and restaurant on-site.

Spent Christmas and New Year's Eve at HCR. There is no air conditioning and only one fan for the entire 1950's style apartment. The room was only cleaned twice during our entire 9 day stay. The first time the maid did not change our sheets, so we obtained sheets at the laundry and changed the sheets ourselves. We could have put up with the camping like conditions, had it not been for the very noisy group below us who insisted on partying day
and night. We could hear every word and were awakened several times by these rude people. Would not go back. It is way overpriced for what you get.
