Café Portofino

Café Portofino Review

The menu at this mostly authentic northern Italian restaurant is as impressive as the views of Kalapaki Bay and the Hauupu range. Owner Giuseppe Avocadi's better-sounding-than-tasting dishes have managed to garner a host of culinary awards and raves from dining critics. The fresh ahi carpaccio is a signature dish, and pasta, scampi, and veal are enhanced by sauces. Linger over coffee and ice cream-filled profiteroles or traditional tiramisu while enjoying romantic harp music. Solid service and a soothing, dignified ambience complete the dining experience, making this a great place for a date if only the food was better and wine less overpriced.

The last time we dined at Cafe Portofino was 3 years ago. The food was tasty. Service was good. However, recently the food quality, quantity and service has taken a nose dive. Food was lukewarm when served. Fish was overcooked. Lasagna was overbaked (noodle was tough and chewy). Sauces were bland, salad portions tiny. Owner was snooty and didn't seem to care about concerns expressed by us. Response to us regarding the service -"my server is very good at what she does." Food quality and temperature response was "hope its better for you next time". No attempts to correct the problem or to waive the charge for a bad meal. There will NOT be a next time!!

We had heard that Cafe Portofino was one of the better Italian restaurants on the island. Boy were we wrong!
They sat us down very quickly and the views are great if there is just 2 of you, if there are more then 2 of you will be staring at the Marriott.
Are food was had a bland taste, was luke warm and was not prepared as stated on the menu.
Kenny our waiter had some issues with inputing the order and we sat for 2 hours waiting for our food. He only checked on us twice after the first 30 minutes.

The owner came to apologize only after we told our server that we did not want the main dishes and just to bring our check after 1.75 hours of waiting. The owner was not sincere in his apology at all and kept blaming the "new" computer system. I would think that you would have bugs worked out by a weekend night.

Now one good thing about the place is their selection of very good Italian wines. They had great knowledge of their selection and spent several minutes talking to us about what we wanted.
But that did not make up for the bad service.
