Budget-Friendly Eats: North Shore
It's not easy to find cheap food on the North Shore, but these little eateries serve up dinner for two for under $20.
Foodland. In a pinch, you can pick up pretty good sushi, ready-to-eat hot entrées, and panini sandwiches at the Foodland grocery store. Princeville Shopping Center, 5–4280 Kuhio Hwy., Princeville, HI, 96722. 808/826–9880.
Hanalei Pizza. Excellent pizza (the pesto with whole-wheat crust is a winner), salads, and a few pasta dishes can be taken out or enjoyed at inside and outside tables at Ching Young Village. Strange as it may seem, pizza is pricey on Kauai. 5-5190 Kuhio Hwy., Hanalei, HI, 96714. 808/826–9494.
Neide's Salsa & Samba. This is one of the best low-cost eateries, with unusual and tasty Brazilian and Mexican food to take out or eat in a casual garden setting at the Hanalei Center. 5-5161 Kuhio Hwy., Hanalei, HI, 96714. 808/826–1851.
Harvest Market. Health foods, such as rice dishes, soups, and salads, are served in the back of this natural-foods store at the Hanalei Center; takeout only. 5-5161 Kuhio Hwy., Hanalei, HI, 96714. 808/826–0089.
Tropical Taco. This is a safe choice for a quick take-out meal of basic Mexican food. 5-5088 Kuhio Hwy., Hanalei, HI, 96714. 808/827–8226. www.tropicaltaco.com.
