When You Arrive in Oahu
Honolulu International Airport is 20 minutes (40 during rush hour) from Waikiki. Car-rental companies have booths at baggage claim; shuttle buses then take you to the car pickup areas. An inefficient airport taxi system requires you to line up to a taxi wrangler who radios for cars (about $25 to Waikiki). Other options include the city's reliable bus system ($2.50) with stops throughout Honolulu and Waikiki, or the Airport Waikiki Express shuttle ($9), which transports you to any hotel in Waikiki. Ask the driver to take Interstate H1, not Nimitz Highway, or your introduction to paradise will be via Honolulu's industrial back side.
