Honolulu and Oahu Nightlife

Gone are the days when there was nothing to do in Honolulu at night. Any guidebook that tells you Honolulu isn’t for the night owl is outdated. Most nights, it’s hard to pick which DJ to see at which nightclub, or which art show opening to attend. In fact, many people who arrive in Oahu expecting to find white-sand beaches and nothing else are surprised at such a vibrant nightlife. Bask

in the shade of the swaying palm trees, watch the sunset over Waikiki, and put on your nice clothes because more and more clubs in Honolulu enforce a dress code.

Posh bars are found in many of the larger hotels, but venture outside of the strip and into places such as Chinatown (which virtually explodes with events on the first Friday of each month) and surrounding neighborhoods, and you’ll discover comfortable local watering holes. Every night of the week you can find musicians in venues from Kailua to Ko Olina—and everywhere in between. Or you can simply walk down Kalakaua Avenue to be entertained by Waikiki’s street performers.

And if all-night dancing isn’t for you, Oahu also has a thriving arts and culture scene, with community-theater productions, stand-up comedy, outdoor concerts, film festivals, and chamber-music performances. Major Broadway shows, dance companies, rock stars, and comedians come through the Islands, too. Check local newspapers—the Honolulu Star-Advertiser or Midweek—for the latest events. Websites like www.nonstophonolulu.com, www.honolulupulse.com, and www.theoffsetter.com also have great information.

Whether you stay out all night or get up early to catch the morning surf, there’s something for everyone on Oahu.
