The story of the Islands begins on the seas. The King Kalakaua's Boathouse Museum,a branch of the Bishop Museum, has interactive exhibits where you can learn about Hawaii's whaling days and the history of Honolulu Harbor, the Clipper Seaplane, and the voyaging canoe Hokulea (often absent at the museum and out touring the Pacific) that helped spark the Hawaiian cultural renaissance and proved that Hawaiians were masters of craftsmanship and navigation. Also featured is the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands exhibit, with information about the unique flora and fauna of the national monument which was established in 2006. Moored next to the Boathouse is a 1778 four-masted, square-rigged ship, the Falls of Clyde, which once brought tea from China to the U.S. West Coast. Self-guided audio tours are available.
