Fodor's Hawaii 2014
Iron Chef Masahara Morimoto of Food Network fame is a big part of the dining scene in Honolulu. He's always in town for the annual Hawaii Food & Wine Festival, which takes place in September and includes an Asia-Pacific night at The Modern led by Morimoto. In the sleek white-and-chartreuse room you'll find the signature dishes served at his restaurants around the world—like Duck Duck Duck (duck three ways) and ishi yaki buri bop (yellowtail and rice cooked at your table in a hot stone pot) along with original creations taking cues from local cuisine, such as the chef's loco moto (wagyu beef with a sunny-side up egg and gravy), and, of course, sushi. Try the tofu, which is made right at your table. You can choose to sit at the sushi bar, the regular bar, or at a table, but try to get a seat outside, with a view overlooking the yacht harbor. The place is also a popular spot for breakfast (Japanese style!) and brunch, and the lunch set menus are a bargain.
