Across from the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Ala Moana Boulevard just as it curves toward Waikiki's Kalakaua Avenue, the 12-story Aqua Palms completed a $15 million transformation into a "condotel" in 2005 and now has studio and luxury one-bedroom suite accommodations. The studios include kitchenettes and the suites have full kitchens; both have tiled entryways, private lanai, and in-room DVD players. One-bedroom penthouse suites are elegant and spacious enough to make you want to move in. The minimal cost difference between the studio and penthouse suite is well worth the "splurge." Guests here have signing privileges at restaurants in the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, at the Diamond Head end of the strip. Pros: Excellent full kitchens in suites, comfortable furnishings, trolley stop directly in front of hotel. Cons: Closest beach access is through Hilton Hawaiian Village across the street.

We stayed here for a week in April, and were very pleased with our jr suite on the 9th floor, which had a nice lanai with views of Diamondhead, the ocean, and DeRussy Park. Staff was attentive and pleasant, too. Used the internet and paid half the rack rate.
