Fodor's Hawaii 2014
Maunakea Marketplace Review
On the corner of Maunakea and Hotel streets is this busy plaza surrounded by shops, an indoor market, and a food court. It gets packed every year for the annual Chinese Lunar New Year. If you appreciate fine tea, visit the unpretentious tea counter in the Tea Hut, a curio shop filled with Chinese gifts and good luck charms.
Hawaiian Chinese Multicultural Museum & Archives. Within the Maunakea Marketplace, the small Hawaiian Chinese Multicultural Museum and Archives displays historic photographs and artifacts where you can learn about events like the Great Chinatown Fire of 1900 that burned down most of the neighborhood. Maunakea Marketplace, 1120 Maunakea St., 2nd Floor, 96817. 808/524–3409. $2. Mon.–Sat. 10–2.
