Perched along the seawall at historic Gray's Beach, Orchids in the luxe Halekulani resort is open all day—it's a locus of power breakfasters, ladies who lunch, celebrating families at the over-the-top Sunday brunch, and the gamut at dinner. The louvered walls are open to the breezes, sprays of orchids add color, the seafood is perfectly prepared, and the wine list is intriguing. The contemporary menu of international flavors reflects the hotel's well-traveled clientele—you can go around the world in one dinner, zigzagging from smoked duck carpaccio to an olive oil-poached salmon with Big Island goat cheese to chicken tagine to steamed sesame long-tailed snapper with shiitake mushrooms. Collard shirts are required for gentlemen. Halekulani executive chef Vikram Garg offers Table One, a custom dining experience within Orchids. He asks you your food preferences and makes culinary magic. It's not mentioned on the website—call to book.

The food was disappointing and the service was awful. They were arragant and acted very dissapointed that we didn't want dessert. I felt like they were implying that we were being cheap. We just didn't want any more of their awful food. We waited a long time for a table and we had made reservations ahead of time. Service was slow. We will never go back. There are so many terrific places to eat in the city that I won't waste my time at Orchards again.
