Fodor's Review

Trust us: we've sent readers here since Mitsu-Ken was an unpromising-looking, battered, tiny hole-in-the-wall; we're happy to report that the restaurant has moved down the block a bit to better quarters, but the downscale neighborhood might still be daunting. Go anyway, and line up to order the garlic chicken (either as a plate lunch, with rice and salad, or chicken only). Crispy, profoundly garlicky, and drizzled with a sweetish glaze that sets the whole thing off, hot Mitsu-Ken chicken will haunt your dreams. But go early; they open at 5 am, and by 1 pm they're washing down the sidewalks. Obsessed locals line up at dawn to get takeout for lunch. It's in Kalihi, not far from the Bishop Museum. And don't forget: cash only! To avoid the wait, call the day before to place your order, then head to the cashier at the "phone order pick-up line."
