Fodor's Review

Hale Vietnam. One of Oahu's first Vietnamese restaurants, this neighborhood spot, popular with budget-minded college kids, expresses its friendly character with its name: hale (hah-lay) is the Hawaiian word for house or home. You'll find the region's expected staples—green-papaya salad, summer rolls, pho, bun (rice noodles). If you're not sure what to order, just ask. The staff is known for their willingness to help those who don't know much about Vietnamese food. Reservations are taken for larger groups only. 1140 12th Ave., Kaimuki, Honolulu, HI, 96816. 808/735–7581.
