3660 on the Rise. This casually stylish eatery is a 10-minute drive from Waikiki in restaurant-packed Kaimuki. Sample Chef Russell Siu's New York Steak Alae (steak grilled with Hawaiian clay salt), the potato-crusted crab cakes, or the signature ahi katsu wrapped in nori (seaweed) and deep-fried with a wasabi-ginger butter sauce. Siu combines a deep understanding of local flavors with a sophisticated palate, making this place especially popular with homegrown gourmands. The dining room can feel a bit snug when it's full (as it usually is); go early or late. 3660 Waialae Ave., Kaimuki, Honolulu, HI, 96816. 808/737–1177. www.3660.com. No lunch. Closed Mon.

My wife and I ate at this restaurant on our honeymoon on a Tuesday. Our server John treated us with great respect, kept our wine glasses full, and was a great addition to our meal. There was a problem with my meal, but the chef immediately fixed it, and they also made us a complimentary dessert for our honeymoon. They even called a cab for us. I was extremely pleased that I chose this place as our honeymoon meal.
