Iwilei

Before the arrival of Captain Cook, Iwilei was a network of fishponds. After his arrival it became home to a prison, railway depot, and houses of ill repute. (When the red-light district was shut down in 1916, one prostitute hopped a ship to Pago Pago. Also on the ship was Somerset Maugham, who immortalized her as Sadie Thompson in his short story "Rain.") Today it is an industrial zone offering a few reasons to visit—the Dole Cannery shopping complex with a multiplex (home to the Hawaii International Film Festival each fall) being the primary one. The shopping center really was a pineapple cannery before its conversion; almost any local of a certain age has tales of summer jobs there.
