Volleyball is an extremely popular spectator sport on the Islands, and no wonder.
Both the men's and women's teams of the University of Hawaii have blasted to a number-one ranking in years past. Crowded, noisy, and exciting home games are played from September through December (women's) and from January through April (men's) in the university's 10,000-seat Stan Sheriff Arena. Lower Campus Rd., Honolulu. 808/956-4481. $8.
There are sand volleyball courts in Waikiki near Fort DeRussy. They are open to the public, so talent levels vary. However, with a winner-plays-on policy, you won't be disappointed with the level as the day progresses. For more advanced play, there is an area at Queen's Beach, but you have to bring your own nets, which leads to a little more court possessiveness. But this is the area where you will find the college kids and pros hitting it while they are in town.
