Fodor's Review

Hawaii's oldest hotel—and the only one in Volcanoes National Park—has emerged from a massive overhaul committed to sustainable practices and promoting local Hawaiian culture and history through its locally sourced restaurants, artisan-crafted decor, and eco-focused guest programs. First built in 1846, Volcano House overlooks the Halema'uma'u Crater at the summit of active volcano Kilauea, boasting what's considered Hawaii's most unique hotel location. Following a $3

million renovation completed in 2013, the property now features 33 rejuvenated guest rooms with simple, rustic-chic decor, rainforest or volcano views, and free Wi-Fi. The main lodge also houses the redone, panoramic The Rim restaurant, where the menu of island favorites is crafted using 95 percent locally-sourced ingredients, and Uncle George's Lounge, serving cocktails and appetizers. The main attraction, though, is exploring the rainforests, lava-scapes, and diverse eco-systems of the park, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve. Volcano House also manages a collection of 10 renovated wooden cabins (set around a shared bathroom) at a campsite three miles away.
