There aren't many places along the east Hawaii coastline to catch the waves when the surf's up, but this is one of the best. It's popular among the local surf crowd, and it's fun to watch the surfers paddle out to catch the waves. The presence of surfers is not an indication that an area is safe for swimmers. The sandy beach is minimal here, a mix of sand and coral rubble debris along the mostly rocky coast. There's limited parking beside the narrow roadside.
