La Bourgogne

$$-$$$, French, Kailua-Kona

User Rating: *** 2.9

Fodor's Review:

A genial husband-and-wife team owns this relaxing, country-style bistro with dark-wood walls and private, romantic booths. The traditional French menu has classics such as escargots, beef with a cabernet sauvignon sauce, rack of lamb with roasted garlic and rosemary, and a less-traditional venison with a pomegranate glaze. Call well in advance for reservations.

Great food and great value

Posted by Richard from Salt Lake City, UT on 7/16/06

The food was excellent and so was the service. It's a quaint atmosphere with an old-world feel. The food is traditional french with great sauces. I highly recommend it.

Disappointing experience

Posted by Janice from Oregon on 3/2/06

10 tables are apparently a few too many on some nights. How frustrating to see other tables get such friendly service (apparently repeat customers) and others get virtually none. The food is very good, but only if it actually reaches your table!

Not interested in parties of 1

Posted by Paula from Maryland on 3/2/06

I called more than 2 weeks in advance to get a reservation for dinner based on the reviews I read here. The woman who answered the phone was absolutely unwilling to accommodate me at any time other than 6pm, despite the fact that there were clearly tables available at different times. She said she would "have to see." Have to see what? Whether a party of two came along? Overall, a ridiculous and frustrating encounter. Great food can never make up for poor attitude. (Had to give ratings for food, atmosphere, etc to post this--definitely wanted other single travelers or business travelers to know of my experience!)
