Fodor's Review:

You fully expect to see Hawaiian paniolos sauntering up to the bar here -- and it's not unheard of. Tante's is the John Wayne version of an elegant dining room with plenty of steaks and ribs on the menu to satisfy even the hungriest cowpoke at prices that won't break the bank. And of course, since this is Hawaii after all, expect to see multicultural dishes rubbing elbows with cowboy classics. Locals flock here for fantastic Filipino dishes like pork adobo (slow-cooked pork simmered in garlic, oil, and vinegar) and chicken lau lau (ground chicken with spices and taro, wrapped in ti leaf and steamed).

I guess I should start with something positive. The dining room was clean and the furnishings were well maintained. Also, the view is quite nice. That's where the good ends. We went in for dinner and were waited on by a man who I could barely understand when he spoke. After an awkward couple of minutes, I was able to convey that I wanted a bloody mary...TWENTY minutes later (no kidding) our waiter returned with the drink and to take our order. The drink, by the way, was disgusting, they must have dumped half a salt shaker in there because it was undrinkable, like liquid salt. We should have left, but my wife and I stuck it out. We both had steaks, both ordered them medium rare and they both came out burnt to a crisp (45 minutes later). We would have sent them back right away, but it was 15 minutes before we even glimpsed our waiter again. At this point we had been in the restaurant about an hour and a half and hadn't had a decent bite to eat or drink. We sent the steaks back, and another 20 minutes later our waiter brought out new ones. These were almost as overcooked as the last ones. No apologies were offered. We asked for the check (without having eaten) and paid and got the heck out of there. We ended up having some decent tacos down the street. To recap: TERRIBLE SERVICE TERRIBLE FOOD TERRIBLE TIME

I took my wife out to celebrate valentines dinner. I did it, becouse I will not be able to on valintines day. The wait for our food was 1-1/2 hours and the couple who came in 10 minutes after us was leaving after eating before we had rcieved our entree. The food was cold and the waiter charged me for two plates instead of ala-carte for my single order. "Both" my food and my wifes were cold. We did not complain, becouse if we sent our food back, we would wait another 1/2 hour for it to come back. Our waiter was scarce the whole time, and forgot part of our order. I LOST MY APPETITE WHEN THE FOOD WAS FINALLY SEARVED, AND SERVED COLD!!!

Tante's Bar & Grill has a second resturant that justed opened a few months ago in Kailua, Kona on the water front on Alii drive. The food was really good. Try the cornbeef hash and eggs for breakfast. The lunch and dinner was also really good. Try the pork or chicken adobo, pork and peas, and the seafood sari sari. Good portions and very good quality. This is where the locals come and eat. The view from this resturant is a killer, If you go to the KONAWEB website and view their webcam. This webcam sits on top of Tante's. You get the panaramic view of the Kailua bay.
