You wouldn't really expect to find a top-notch B&B in Kau, but just up the road from South Point, this charming yellow house offers large, comfortable private suites with beautifully restored hardwood floors, private lanai with ocean and mountain views, and big, comfy beds decked out with high-thread-count sheets and fluffy down comforters. Choose between a full hot breakfast or a Continental breakfast of local fruits and baked goods. For those anxious to get an early start on exploring the area's green- and black-sand beaches or Volcanoes National Park (a half-hour drive away), hosts Kenny Joyce and Kilohana Domingo are happy to pack a bento box to go. Guests can also look forward to a nightly cocktail hour and plenty of great advice from their hosts. The B&B prides itself on its programs and work surrounding Hawaiian cultural arts, and guests are welcome to take part in lei-making workshops and other lessons on traditional Hawaiian handicrafts. Pros: luxurious beds, beautifully restored house, delicious breakfast. Cons: strange location, no pool.
