Although it has won awards for preserving its unique history (the grounds include a heiau, a sacred fishpond, and a replica of the summer home of King David Kalakaua), the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort is not doing such a hot job at preserving the guest accommodations. That said, if you can find a good rate, this is still a good place to stay, mainly for its proximity to Kahaluu, one of the best snorkeling beaches on the island, and its extra-large rooms. With its lower prices and larger rooms, the hotel tends to be particularly popular with families. Pros: large rooms, unique history, next to one of the island's best snorkeling beaches. Cons: restaurant has gone downhill, hotel needs a face-lift.
