Fodor's Review:

Everyone around here says the same thing: "Kiawe has awesome pizza, but it's a little expensive for pizza." And it's true—the wood-fired pizza at this warm and pretty Italian eatery, with red walls and wood floors, has a perfect thin crust and an authentic Italian taste, but you have to be prepared to spend around $15 on a typical pie. Food options are limited in this area, though. Go for it.

We spent the day hiking at the Volcanoes National Park and arrived at the restaurant in 2 separate cars. My son, in the first car, tried to order 2 pizzas, but since we were not all there yet, the girl said he had to order it as take-out and pay now, even though he told her we wanted to sit down. We arrived several minutes later, and we said we wanted a table. A man (owner??)who was about 60 finally came over to wait on us and was very unhappy to find out that we wanted a table. We were starving and the pizzas were still going to take about 30 minutes, so my son bought some Volcano plums in the attached little store (which we assumed was part of the restaurant) for us to share as we waited. The man came over and said in a very nasty manner, "It is not very nice to bring outside food into a restaurant. At least not in this part of the world!" He walked away. We were tired and hungry, and he totally ruined our visit. We finally got the very expensive pizzas, ate, and left, sorry that we had ever come. The experience was a real "downer" on our second night together in Volcano.

The first night we went here, the staff didn't even acknowledge us. So we left. Unfortunately, there are very few dining options in Volcano so we went back on our second night in town. Again the service was pretty bad, but the food was fantastic.
