A stately and comfortable Queen Anne-style mansion, Hale Ohia was built in the 1930s as a summer place for a wealthy Scotsman. The namesake Ohia cottage, large enough for a family, has a full kitchen. The Ihilani cottage is the cushiest of the group; built into an old water tank, it's naturally lighted, beautifully designed, and completely private. Breakfast (including homemade banana bread, macadamia nuts, and cranberries) is left in your refrigerator while you're away in the afternoon so that you can enjoy it at your leisure in the morning. This place does everything possible to make everyone from couples to families to solo travelers feel at home. Pros: unique architecture, hot tub, plenty of props like umbrellas and flashlights for volcano excursions. Cons: rooms need to be updated; property cat roams around, which could be a problem for allergic guests.
