This elegant old family home is in the exclusive Reed's Bay neighborhood, just a few blocks from downtown Hilo. Relaxation is the key here. Bounded on two sides by tropical streams and forest, there's no noise except the gentle gurgle of the stream. The 1916-era home has been carefully restored, retaining the original light fixtures, fine ohia wood flooring, antique furniture, and some original bath fixtures; some of the rooms include large whirlpool tubs. You'll find lots of room to unwind in the expansive glassed-in lanai. Breakfast (George always whips up a warm and wonderful treat) is served in the large dining room. Business travelers enjoy easy access to town, government offices, and the University of Hawaii at Hilo. There's a $20 additional fee for one-night stays. Pros: gourmet breakfasts, Jacuzzi tubs, restored historic home. Con: fee for single-night stays.
