Fodor's Review

Sushi Rock. Located in historic Hawi Town, Sushi Rock isn't big on size—its narrow dining room is brightly painted and casually decorated with Hawaiian and Japanese knickknacks—but discerning locals and akamai (in-the-know) visitors come here for some of the island's best sushi. The restaurant prides itself on using local ingredients like grass-fed beef tenderloin, goat cheese, macadamia nuts, and mango in the Island-inspired sushi rolls. It also serves up a variety of cooked seafood, chicken, noodle dishes, sandwiches, and salads for lunch and dinner. Everything is plated beautifully and served either at the sushi bar, at one of the handful of indoor tables, or on the covered front patio. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan items are available, and a full bar even has house-infused vodka. 55-3435 Akoni Pule Hwy., Hawi, HI, 96719. 808/889–5900.

Most Interesting Sushi Rolls Ever

This place has amazingly delicious appetizers and rolls made from very non-traditional ingredients put together in highly inventive ways. This is not the place to go for "traditional" sushi and sashimi - they have it, but you can get that anywhere. They have far more interesting things on offer. Well worth the drive from our hotel. The Shitake Poppers appetizer was possibly the tastiest thing I've ever had at a sushi restaurant.
