Puakea Ranch
56-2864 Akoni Pule Hwy., Hawi, Hawaii, 96719, USA, Hawaii, USAWhy We Like It
These meticulously restored ranch houses exude contemporary luxury and comfort, but still have the heart and history of Hawaii in their bones. You can feel a sort of aloha magic as you look out on the wild variety of flora on the property and snuggle into a chair on the expansive porch to read one of their many local history books. It’s clear how much Christie, the owner, loves the property and keeping that history alive.
Fodor's Expert Review
Four beautifully restored ranch houses and bungalows occupy this historic country estate in Hawi, where guests enjoy their own private swimming pools, horseback riding for kids, round-the-clock concierge availability, and plenty of fresh fruit from the orchards. Listed on the State Historic Register, Puakea Ranch pays homage to the four generations of cowboys and plantation workers who once lived on the property. The two-bedroom Yoshi's House sleeps six and has ocean views from the lanai, plus a lava-rock swimming pool. Cowboy House is a three-bedroom former bunkhouse that sleeps six, while the Miles Away bungalow provides two bedrooms and its own private dipping pool. A large studio, James Cottage shares a swimming pool with Cowboy House, and also has its own private hot tub. Decorated with original local art depicting the property, each home has its own kitchen, barbecue grills, and washer-dryer.

Room
Rooms and beds vary based on each different house and within each house. These four ranch houses all have vastly different personalities, but each reflects the history of the area through décor, books, and other artifacts. Whether a traveling couple looking for more room or a family, rooms can be adjusted to meet various needs. Though they are beautiful, you probably won’t be spending too much time in them since there is so much else to enjoy on the property.
You Should Know The owner respectfully asks that James Cottage remain an adults-only hideaway.
Bathroom
Every house has a standard bathroom (except James cottage), each a bit different, with simple, lovely décor. You won’t want to even bother with the baths inside, though, because each house has an incredible exterior bath house that feel almost spa-like. Each one has its own personality (one has a giant copper tub that you’ll never want to get out of), but they’re all relaxing and incredibly indulgent.
You Should Know There is no cell service at the ranch, but their wi-fi is great.
Lobby
There is no lobby at this ranch property, just drive right up to your cottage.
You Should Know The front gate key pad can be a bit finicky – be sure to punch in the code slowly and deliberately.
Pool
Two of the houses have their own pools, the others have their own hot tubs, and there’s a gorgeous natural common pool with lounge chairs tucked away behind the animal pens.

Dining
It’s a BYOB type of place – no on site drinks or food, but the kitchen is full sized and there is a nice grill on the porch for cooking whatever you bring in. Coffee and tea are already on site for you, so no need to pick that up (unless you’re picky). A variety of dishes and cooking accessories can also be found in the kitchen.
Tip Plan your breakfast or lunch around what the ranch has in its garden including kale and other leafy greens, as well as fresh eggs from the ranch hens. If you’re coming from city life, picking your food from the garden and grabbing eggs from the coop box can be a really special treat.
