Tennis

Many of the island's resorts rent rackets, balls, and shoes and allow nonguests to play for a fee. On the Kohala Coast, try the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii, the Hilton Waikoloa Village, and Waikoloa Beach Marriott. In Keauhou, near the Sheraton, there's Holua Tennis & Pickleball Center; in Kailua-Kona, you can play at the Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel and the Royal Kona Resort. There are also several free public courts on both sides of the island. Call the County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation (808/961–8311) for information about public courts.

Edith Kanaka'ole Multi-Purpose Tennis Stadium. Both indoor and outdoor courts are available here for public use. Ho‘olulu County Park, Pi‘ilani and Kalanikoa Sts., Hilo, Hawaii, 96720. 808/961–8720.

Higashihara Park. You can play for free at this park near Honalo. Off Hwy. 11, before Honalo, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, 96740.

Holua Tennis & Pickleball Center. This is by far the nicest tennis center in Kona town, with 11 beautiful, tournament-quality courts (7 lighted), and even a pickleball center. Daily TennisCize, drop-in play, lessons, and pro shop (with shoe and racquet rental) are available. There's ice cold water on every court, a very nice shower and changing room, and breezy lounge with vending machines. Old Kona Airport Park. A community tennis organization nicely maintains the courts here. It can get very hot midday so plan on using hats, sunscreen, and long sleeved rash guards to play comfortably. North end of Kuakini Hwy., Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, 96740. 808/961–8561.
