Fodor's Expert Review The Blue Heron Inn

1346 Blue Heron La., Darien, Georgia, 31305, USA

Editor's Note: This location is reported to be under new ownership and therefore this review may contain inaccuracies.

Bill and Jan Chamberlain's airy, well-reputed Lowcountry-style home has location as a prime draw: it sits on the edge of the marsh and is only minutes from the ferry at the Sapelo Island Visitor Center. The downstairs dining and living areas have an open feel with a large, rustic fireplace and a sweeping view of the marsh. Guest rooms are nicely appointed with a Southern coastal ambience; some have four-poster beds, and all have a view of the marsh. The proprietors, who moved to the coast from Athens, Georgia, provide drinks and hors d'oeuvres in the great room or on the back porch every evening, and their breakfast specialties include lime French toast and wild Georgia shrimp omelets.

PROS

  • deliciously inventive breakfasts
  • decks provide great views
  • friendly ownership and service

CONS

  • the small number of rooms means the place can book up fast
  • the smaller rooms can feel tight with two people
