Getting Here & Around

The Coastal Isles and the Okefenokee Features

Getting Here & Around

Visiting the region is easiest by car, particularly Sapelo Island, because many of the outer reaches of Georgia are remote places with little in the way of transportation options. Touring by bicycle is an option for most of the region, but note that the ferries at Sapelo and Cumberland do not allow bicycles on board. Except for Little St. Simons, the Golden Isles are connected to the mainland by bridges around Brunswick and are the only coastal isles accessible by car. Sapelo Island and the Cumberland Island National Seashore can only be reached by ferry from Meridian and St. Marys, respectively.

By Air

The coastal isles are served by the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, 6 mi north of Brunswick, and the McKinnon St. Simons Airport on St. Simons Island. McKinnon accommodates light aircraft and private planes. The closest major airports are in Savannah and Jacksonville, FL.

By Boat & Ferry

Cumberland Island, Sapelo Island, and Little St. Simons are accessible only by ferry or private launch. The Cumberland Queen serves Cumberland Island and the Anne Marie serves Sapelo Island. The Lodge on Little St. Simons Island operates a private launch that is available only to overnight or day-trip guests by prior arrangement.

By Car

From Brunswick take the Jekyll Island Causeway ($3 per car) to Jekyll Island and the Torras Causeway to St. Simons and Sea Island. You can get by without a car on Jekyll Island and Sea Island, but you'll need one on St. Simons. You cannot bring a car to Cumberland Island, Little St. Simons, or Sapelo.

By Taxi

Courtesy Cab provides taxi service from Brunswick to and from the islands for a set rate that ranges from $15 to $25 to St. Simons and from $25 to Jekyll Island with a $2 per person surcharge to a maximum of seven persons. Island Cab Service can shuttle you around St. Simons for fares that range between $7 and $15 depending on your destination.
