Planning Your Time
A traveler could easily get lost on the backroads of southwest Georgia, so perhaps the best way to take in the sites of this region is to park your car and board the SAM Shortline Southwest Georgia Excursion Train in Cordele. The ride will take you to Georgia Veterans State Park, the Rural Telephone Museum, Habitat for Humanity's Global Village, the Rylander Theatre, Windsor Hotel, and Plains. This way you'll get a sense of what spots deserve more time and which are suited for a drive-by.
Many of southwest Georgia's attractions are ideal day trips from Atlanta. Warm Springs, Callaway Gardens, and Pine Mountain are a 90-minute drive from Atlanta. Thomasville is a little over four hours from Atlanta, so plan on an overnight stay.
